About GeoRessources
The creation of the laboratory
GeoRessources is a Mixed Research Unit (UMR) between the Université de Lorraine and the CNRS. GeoRessources is affiliated with the INSU-CNRS, a member of the Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers (OSU) OTELo and UAR of the CNRS, as well as the scientific hub OTELo of the Université de Lorraine.
The GeoRessources laboratory was established on January 1, 2013, by bringing together all the research forces in applied geology within the Nancy geosciences community, including teams from the G2R, LAEGO, LEM, CRPG, and IJL laboratories.

Presentation of the laboratory and its scientific trajectory
GeoRessources cultivates fundamental research and knowledge transfer to industry. GeoRessources defines itself as France’s leading laboratory for meeting societal and industrial needs in the rational use of our sub-surface.
GeoRessources’ research activities, as well as training in and through research and interactions with the socio-economic world, are modeled on the I-SITE project Lorraine Université d’Excellence (LUE) and aim to promote:
♦ interdisciplinarity,
♦ engineering,
♦ regional roots,
♦ and a strong socio-economic ecosystem.
The national and international recognition of the Université de Lorraine in certain key areas of subsurface engineering (ranked 11th in the world in 2020 in the Shanghai ranking in the mining engineering category) illustrates the place and importance of the GeoRessources laboratory in this ecosystem.
The historical scientific trajectory of GeoRessources
GeoRessources’ historical scientific trajectory is rooted in the exploitation of Lorraine’s underground resources. GeoRessources owes its international recognition to renowned figures in the fields of:
♦ numerical geology,
♦ fluid inclusions,
♦ metallogeny,
♦ organic geochemistry,
♦ mineral processing,
♦ geomechanics,
♦ and post-mining and geological storage of radioactive waste and CO2.
Partnership-based research at GeoRessources
Partnership-based research in the field of geological resources, geomechanics, and the resulting geological modeling is based on:
♦ ongoing collaborations with public industrial and commercial establishments (EPIC) such as: ADEME, ANDRA, INERIS, BRGM, IFPEN,
♦ and numerous industrial collaborations through contracts of varying size, duration, and geometry (Chair, LabCom, European projects, etc.).
For all these reasons, GeoRessources has been awarded the CARNOT label.

GeoRessources’ proximity to teaching components
GeoRessources’ research is also strengthened by its long-standing relationships with the educational departments of the Université de Lorraine:
♦ École des Mines de Nancy,
♦ École Nationale Supérieure de Géologie (ENSG),
♦ the geosciences department of the FST,
♦ and the PhD school (RP2E puis SIRENa).
You can see this proximity with the geographical location of GeoRessources’ sites. The laboratory is on three campuses of the Université de Lorraine: ARTEM, FST-Aiguillettes, and Brabois-Roubault.
